Celestial Event: Perseid Meteor Showers with astronomer Matthew Johnson

Free Event, Hosted at Aton Forest, August 12, 2024 from 8:30 pm to 11:00 pm

The Aton Forest Ecological Research Station in Norfolk, CT invites you to view the Perseid Meteor Shower. Astronomer Matthew Johnson, board member of Aton and author of the article The Celestial Sphere column in Norfolk Now, will guide and inspire us. Considerations for attendees:

The eve of August 12th is the peak of the Perseid Showers.
Meteor showers are best observed without optical aids. One just observes!
However, telescopes will be available. Feel free to bring your own.

Attendees should bring:

bring children please!
beach-type chairs (best are chaise type reclining)
blankets (astronomy is a spectator event with little movement and one becomes rapidly cool)
flashlight, bug spray, binoculars, optics (spotting scopes, tripod mounts)
food and non-alcoholic drinks

Attendees should NOT bring:

pets
glass bottles
makeup including mascara which permanently damages optics coatings

Sunset 19:56 pm. Dusk 20:25. Astronomical twilight: 21:11

Porta potty facilities will be available

Please do not drink and drive
